It all began with Dr. Azad Moopen’s dream to provide quality healthcare to all. The journey started with a small clinic in Dubai, which soon spread worldwide. Today, Aster DM Healthcare serves millions, and despite the name change, the love for Dr. Moopen and his vision remains powerful.

Today, let’s explore the history of Aster DM Healthcare and Aster Hospitals in India.

Aster DM Healthcare’s 2024 Highlights

Aster Hospital History

The Story of Aster DM Healthcare dates back to 1987 in Dubai, UAE. It was founded by Dr. Azad Moopen.

The Aster Hospital owner, Dr Azad, started as a small healthcare provider in the Middle East. As of today, it has become India’s most prominent healthcare group. It has hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and healthcare consultancy services in 7 nations.

In 2011, Aster kickstarted in the UAE by opening a medical centre in Sharjah. The opening ceremony was a big event, with K.J. Yesudas, a famous Indian playback singer.

This was just the beginning of Aster’s journey to expand its reach.

Two years later, in 2013, Aster DM Healthcare set its sights on the Philippines. They decided to start by building pharmacies, with plans to add hospitals later. Alongside this, Aster launched a special project: the DM Healthcare Foundation Philippines. What was so special about this one?

It aimed to provide free heart surgery for Filipino children in need.

By 2014, Aster’s vision expanded even further. The company was planning to build the Aster Medcity hospitals in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, two cities in Kerala, India. These hospitals were designed to be some of the largest healthcare centres in South Asia.

2015 was another exciting year. Sachin Tendulkar, India’s cricket legend, helped Aster celebrate a big achievement by opening its 150th pharmacy in Abu Dhabi. He became the face of Aster Pharmacy!

In the same year, Aster also increased its ownership in Sanad Hospital in Saudi Arabia.

In 2016, Aster took over the Kavery Medical Institute in Bengaluru, India. After upgrading the facilities, they renamed it Aster CMI Hospital. As of date, it has 509 beds and multiple specialised centres. The inauguration was again a star-studded affair, with Sachin Tendulkar doing the honours.

In 2018, Aster made its debut on the Indian stock exchange by launching its IPO. This move helped raise funds for its continued growth and expansion.

In December 2022, Aster celebrated its 35th anniversary by announcing that it had grown to operate 455 healthcare units across the UAE.
