Eicher Motors Limited: Driving India’s Automobile Legacy Since 1948

Home » Personal Finance » History » Eicher Motors Limited: Driving India’s Automobile Legacy Since 1948

Eicher Motors Limited is the flagship company of the Eicher Group and one of the top names in India’s automobile industry. As of May 29, 2025, it ranks as the fifth largest company by market cap in the Nifty Auto Index.

But the journey of Eicher Motors started long before 1982.

It began in 1948 as Goodearth Company focused on selling and servicing imported tractors. Later, in 1958, it was renamed and incorporated as Eicher Tractor Corporation of India Ltd. Finally, in 1982, after expanding into commercial vehicles, it became Eicher Motors Ltd.

What are the products and services of Eicher Motors, and what is its current revenue?

Let’s explore the rich history of Eicher Motors Limited.

History of Eicher Motors Ltd: Major Changes and Achievements

In a country where farming was once entirely dependent on manual labour, a small spark of change arrived in 1948.

That’s when the Goodearth Company was born. Its goal was not to build tractors yet but to sell and service imported ones. India was still young as a nation.

Between 1952 and 1957, this company brought in around 1,500 tractors, helping many farmers till their land more easily.

Then came a turning point in 1958, when Eicher Tractor Corporation of India Ltd. was born.

Just a year later, in 1959, something magical happened. India’s first indigenously built tractor rolled out of Eicher’s Faridabad factory. It wasn’t just a machine. It was a symbol of self-reliance, built on Indian soil, for Indian hands.

By 1960, Eicher had already become a name to remember. The company renamed itself Eicher Tractors India Ltd., and over the next decade, it proudly achieved 100% indigenisation by 1975.

A Road to Expansion: Building Bigger Dreams (1980s – 1990s)

The next chapter of Eicher’s journey began in 1980 when it got a new identity: Eicher Goodearth Ltd. But this was just the beginning.

In 1982, it signed a path-breaking collaboration with Mitsubishi, entering the world of Light Commercial Vehicles. That same year, Eicher Motors Ltd. came into existence.

Soon, the wheels moved faster. 1985 was celebrated as Eicher’s Silver Jubilee Year, and by 1986, Eicher Motors officially began operations. In 1987, Eicher Tractors made a bold move—it went public, opening its journey to thousands of new shareholders.

In 1990, Eicher bought a 26% stake in Enfield India Ltd., the maker of the iconic Royal Enfield motorcycles. That small investment would one day change the face of Indian biking. In 1991, Eicher took over Ramon & Demm, strengthening its engineering base. The very next year, Eicher Tractors was named “Company of the Year” in the four-wheeler category.

By 1993, Eicher had acquired a 60% stake in Enfield India. The two-wheeler company was now a big part of the Eicher family. In 1994, the technical agreement with Mitsubishi came to an end.

That same year, Enfield India became Royal Enfield Motors Ltd.

In 1996, Eicher Tractors and Royal Enfield Motors merged into one—Eicher Ltd.

A New Age of Innovation (2005 – 2024)

In 2005, Eicher shifted focus and sold its tractor and engine business to TAFE Motors & Tractors Ltd. A new chapter opened in 2008 when Eicher Motors and Volvo Group came together to form VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV).

By 2010, the company launched the VE-series of heavy-duty Eicher trucks. But the real heartbeat of India came alive with Royal Enfield’s launches:

  • 2012: The powerful Thunderbird 350 & 500 hit the roads.
  • 2013: A second manufacturing plant came up in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu. That same year, the bold Continental GT 535cc café racer was launched globally from London.
  • 2014: The first-ever concept store in Saket, New Delhi, opened. Soon after, the first exclusive Royal Enfield store in London launched.

In 2015, Royal Enfield acquired Harris Performance (UK) to strengthen its design and engineering. It also set up Royal Enfield North America (RENA) in Milwaukee, USA.

The big adventure continued in 2016 with the Himalayan, the brand’s first true-blue adventure motorcycle. Built for “all roads and no roads,” it became an instant favourite.

2017 saw the creation of a world-class Tech Centre in Leicestershire, UK, focused on designing the future of Royal Enfield for the global market.

Then came a big moment in 2018—after 50 years, Royal Enfield launched air-cooled parallel twin-cylinder motorcycles, the Continental GT 650 and Interceptor INT 650. These beauties made waves across India and abroad.

In 2019, the company aligned with BS VI emission norms, ensuring cleaner and greener rides. It also started compact studio stores, bringing Royal Enfield closer to rural India.

In 2020, Royal Enfield launched the Meteor 350, a sleek cruiser perfect for both city streets and highway escapes.

The emotional connection grew deeper in 2021, with the launch of the All-New Classic 350. It wasn’t just a motorcycle; it was nostalgia on two wheels—reborn for a new generation.

Then in 2022, the company introduced the stylish and urban-friendly Hunter 350, which quickly won hearts and even the Indian Motorcycle of the Year 2023 award.

In 2023, after creating a buzz at EICMA 2022, Royal Enfield launched the much-awaited Super Meteor 650—a true cruiser that impressed bikers around the world.

Now, in 2024, Eicher Motors announced its arrival in the electric vehicle (EV) space with an all-new brand: Flying Flea. Stylish, purposeful, and futuristic. This EV aims to make electric riding exciting and accessible for India and the world.

How Eicher Motors is Lighting Up Rural India Through Education

Back in 1996, the Eicher Group started the Goodearth Education Foundation with a heartfelt mission: to educate India’s children, especially focusing on girls and those in rural areas who need it the most. They believed education could change lives and transform the future of the country.

Their first effort was in Rai Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

Here, they supported 63 government primary schools, helping around 15,000 children over four years. But they didn’t stop there. By 1998, they expanded their work to places like Thane in Maharashtra, Alwar in Rajasthan, and Solan in Himachal Pradesh, reaching out to about 9,000 more children in 90 schools.

How did they make a difference?

They trained teachers to become inspiring guides, created learning materials that made lessons fun, and worked closely with parents to make sure every child had the support to attend school. When school buildings needed repair, they helped fix them. They even set up new schools for children who couldn’t access existing ones.

Eicher Motors’ commitment shows us that real progress comes from caring deeply about the community.
