History of Nestle India Limited

Do you remember the taste of Maggi noodles you enjoyed with your friends after school?

Of course you do! It was indeed the best part of most of our childhood.

Nestlé isn’t just about food; it’s about feeding people, protecting the planet, and promoting health for generations to come.

He history of Nescafe began back in 1867 when Henri Nestlé launched a small food venture. Over 150 years later, that venture has grown into the world’s leading food and beverage company.

Henri’s visionary legacy remains at the heart of the company’s success.

Currently, Nestle company has over 2000 brands and serves in almost 191 nations.

But when and where did the idea of Nestle India Limited come from?

It was back in 1912 when a special bond between India and NESTLÉ began to brew. This began when The NESTLÉ Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company (Export) Limited stepped into the Indian market.

By 1947, when India gained independence, the country’s focus shifted toward local production.

Nestlé, always supportive of local initiatives, decided to strengthen its roots in India.

In 1961, the company opened its first factory in Moga, Punjab. It was indeed contributing to India’s milk economy and responding to the government’s call to increase local milk production.

But Nestlé didn’t stop there.

They introduced Agricultural Services. Their aim was to help farmers improve milk yields, manage crops better, and even secure bank loans.

Nestle India Limited was all set to grow with the community.

Nestlé’s impact continued to expand.

Milk collection centres were set up, building trust with local farmers. Thus, slowly but surely, Moga changed from a rural district into an industrial hub.

Nestlé’s product range is a household name, from NESCAFÉ to MAGGI, MILKYBAR to KIT KAT.  But that’s not all—MAGGI also launched an edible fork made from wheat flour as part of their ‘Desh ke liye 2 minute’ initiative. This eco-friendly move helps reduce plastic waste.

And recently, they’ve expanded to include everyday essentials like NESTLÉ Milk and NESTLÉ Dahi.

Nestlé India continues to innovate. By the end of 2024, they’ll bring NESPRESSO’s premium coffee experience to India with the first boutique opening in Delhi.

Nestlé India is also teaming up with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories to launch a joint venture. This shall focus on nutraceutical products. Thus, blending Nestlé’s health solutions with Dr Reddy’s market presence.

So, when actually was Nestle founded in India?

The company was founded in India on March 28, 1959, when it began operating under the name Nestlé India Ltd.

Nestlé’s relationship with India dates back to 1912 when it started trading as The NESTLÉ Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company (Export) Limited. Initially, it imported and sold finished products in the Indian market.

After India’s independence in 1947, with the government’s focus on local production, Nestlé responded by establishing its first factory in 1961 at Moga, Punjab.
