Retail investment in India has surged significantly in the past few years. While the stock market was thought to be a niche profession, and only a handful of people used to invest in it, now, the scenario has changed a lot though a long way to go. Witnessing the rising interest of retail investors in the market, SEBI in collaboration with CDSL and NSDL has come up with a Unified Investor Platform. This platform is all about consolidating all the financial information of the companies, and investors, in one place so that it becomes easier for the investors to access them without going here and there.

Launch of Unified Investor App

On 20 February 2025, SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch launched the Unified Investor App and applauded the efforts of both depositories for coming together in the interest of the investors and investing.

On CDSL it is known as MyEasi while on NSDL it is the SPEED-e app. While the names are different, the underlying purpose and technology are safe for both apps.

SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch has commented “It’s always gratifying for a regulator to see market participants collaborate because what that means really is that they are putting the investor centre stage of what they are doing,”.

It is actually for the benefit of the investors that both the depositories have come together and worked tirelessly to develop this platform that can boost the investors’ opportunities.

How will the Unified Investor Platform work?

This unified investor platform will accumulate all types of data from the financial statements, and fragmented data, and consolidate these data into this app which can be accessed by the investors to analyze their portfolios. The app will show the investor all his or her portfolio details in one place as well – whether it is equities, mutual fund units, open trading positions, or even AIFs. Now when all the data are in one place, it becomes easier to analyze the portfolio’s health, and diversification quotient easily and make wiser investment decisions.

The SEBI Chairperson also focused on the point that this kind of platform was only available for institutional investors and not for single or retail investors. However, it is time that retail investors also get equal access to information a data so that they can also make informed investment decisions. She called this true democratization.

She also proposes that the CDSL and NSDL will soon start analyzing the data and present the analysis simply and more easily to retail investors for better understanding. If only the data is available without any analysis, then it can be a waste of opportunity she added to her speech.

Benefits of Unified Investor Platform

There are mainly three main benefits of this Unified Investors Platform which include –

  • First and foremost, the consolidation of all fragmented data available on CDSL and NSDL will help the investor easily access all the data without searching for the same on different platforms or websites. This will save time and effort and help them focus on the analysis of the data for better investment decision-making.
  • The second benefit is regarding the elimination of fraudulent intermediaries. As retail investors, it has been always tougher to access financial statements of companies, results, and other data also many retail investors do not have an idea from where to source them and most of them do not have much time to access and analyze them. Thus, most of them depend on intermediaries, and these intermediaries often turn out to be irrelevant, or fraudulent. Now with this platform, the data will be sourced directly from the NSDL and CDSL so there are no intermediaries in between, no hefty charges, or fees, and no irrelevant or false data. This will in turn increase the investment opportunities for the investors and also help them make investment decisions and trading decisions quickly.
  • The third benefit of this Unified Investor App is that it will facilitate the inheritance and transmission of assets without much hassle. Often in India, it has been seen that the Demat accounts remain unclosed even after the demise of the account holder as his or her family member had no clue of the investment, or even if they had so they do not know from which all places they need to go to sell the asset or claim the money. With this platform, the family members can easily get access to all the investments and information of the investor/ account holder and can get assets transmitted to another Demat easily too.

Wrapping up

While SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri shared her plans of building a platform that can capture the entire journey of an investor, she ended her launch speech by saying that this platform is one of the big steps towards revolutionizing the investment arena, and it indeed is information is key to wise investment decision making.
