Join us on a journey through the history of Tata Consumer Products Limited.

Together, let us witness how it grew into a global consumer products giant with over 200 products in 40 countries.

Tata Consumer Products History

Once upon a time, in 1868, a young man named Jamsetji Tata started a small trading firm.

Little did he know this tiny seed would grow into a massive tree of business.

Today, Tata Consumer Products Limited stands tall as a global giant.

But it wasn’t always this way.

In 1962, it officially kicked off its journey as a private limited company, with its home base in Mumbai, India. From there, it ventured on a series of adventures that would shape how people worldwide enjoy their everyday products.

In 1963, Tata Consumer Products was converted into a public limited company.

Back in 1964, Tata teamed up with a big name in Indian tea, James Finlay, forming Tata Finlay.

This partnership set the stage for Tata’s dominance in the tea industry.

Then, in 1979, Tata put its thinking cap on and developed New Salt Works, making waves with innovative methods.

In 1983, Tata Salt hit the market, becoming India’s first iodised, vacuum-evaporated, branded salt. Talk about a game-changer in the salt scene!

But Tata didn’t stop there. In 1985, they introduced the poly pack, sealing their status as a household name in India.

As the years rolled on, Tata spread its wings even further.

In 1991, they decided to dive into the world of brands, expanding beyond just tea.

The Transformative 2000s

Then came the big move in 2000 when Tata acquired Tetley, a famous tea brand known worldwide. This acquisition put Tata on the global map.

The early 2000s were a whirlwind of expansion.

Tata scooped up Good Earth in the USA in 2005 and Eight O’Clock Coffee in the same year, marking their territory in the American market.

They didn’t forget about Africa either, snagging a stake in Joekels Tea in South Africa in 2006.

And Tata wasn’t done with acquisitions yet.

In 2007, they grabbed Mount Everest Mineral Water and Vitax, a popular tea brand in Poland.

As time went on, Tata’s portfolio grew, and in 2010, they rebranded as Tata Global Beverages, reflecting their global reach.

The story didn’t end there. Tata kept innovating, launching Tata Sampann in 2015, a brand focused on providing nutritious products.

A New Beginning: Formation of Tata Consumer Products

In February 2020, a monumental event unfolded in the business world.

The consumer products business of Tata Chemicals Ltd. joined hands with Tata Global Beverages Ltd., giving rise to a new entity: Tata Consumer Products.

With a ‘Taste of Better’, their portfolio kept expanding.

From salt to pulses, spices to ready-to-cook mixes, and from breakfast cereals to snacks and mini-meals, it kept going.

And just when you thought they were done, Tata made moves in 2021.

It acquired Kottaram Agro Foods (KAF) and Tata SmartFoodz Ltd., dipping their toes into the ready-to-eat segment.

But wait, there’s more!

In 2024, Tata set its sights on Capital Foods and Organic India, showing no signs of slowing down.

And so, the story of Tata Consumer Products continues a tale of commitment to making everyday life a little bit better for everyone.
